Staying happy at work

09/11/2022

Your mood directly affects your productivity and quality of work produced, so making your office a positive space is definitely worth doing.

Being unhappy in your workplace isn’t always due to your job, so before considering jumping ship, try some of these tips and see how much better you can feel.

Make your space your own

Thinking about your daily schedule, many people come to realise that they spend more time at work than they do sleeping.

So why do we not put effort into making our workplace comfortable?

As long as you are staying within company policy, add things to your space that bring joy!

Trinkets, pictures of loved ones, even plants.

Small things that are important to you.

Avoid clutter, but don’t hesitate to create a happy and personalised space to work in.

Build relationships with co-workers

An office building is a shared space, and as humans we desire interaction and connection with those around us.

If you’re spending 8 hours a day, 5 days a week with these people, shouldn’t you be friendly?

Keeping your personal life and work life separate is important, but work friendships will make you feel better about going in every day.

Your co-workers understand what you do, so they can help out with any issues you’re having.

Even just having someone to talk to during lunch can boost your mood.

Nobody is asking you to be best buds and hang out outside of work, just don’t be shy or avoid being friendly with those around you.

Don’t mix personal problems with work problems

You’re human.

Things can go on behind closed doors, personal issues can be affecting your mood at work.

The best thing to do for your sake is to leave them at the door.

It’s all about balance, if you need to prioritise things at home, then take some time off to sort through them.

Your wellbeing and stability should always come first.

If you can see a difference in your concentration, productivity and determination at work, then consider the best option for you at that time.

At the end of the day, you know what’s right for you.

When possible, leave personal worries and stresses at home, sometimes putting yourself into your work can help take your mind off things.

Look after your physical health

Firstly, you have to make sure you’re getting enough sleep.

Sleep is so important when it comes to your mood.

If you aren’t rested enough your concentration is down, you aren’t as productive and you generally just feel a bit rubbish.

Then you have to think about your diet.

Not eating enough means that you don’t have the energy you need to get through your workday, or function at all really.

Eating three balanced meals a day and getting plenty of water will greatly improve your mood day-to-day.

Coffee alone can’t start your day the right way and definitely won’t sustain you.

Plus, the caffeine crash that comes after too much coffee can leave you more exhausted than when you started.

Take a break

If you have a busy day, work can often cut into your personal time.

Whether it’s taking a shorter lunch, skipping breaks, not taking holidays or working from home.

Sometimes these things are inevitable, but you have to remember that your personal time is in fact yours.

Overworking yourself will just lead to more stress and unhappiness.

Taking a breather isn’t a bad thing.

Reward yourself

Everything that you do at work means something, even if it comes without thanks or appreciation.

Don’t base your worth off of rewards from management or co-workers.

Appreciate your achievements and progression for your own sake.

Achievements aren’t always the same, some days it can be completing a tough project.

Others, it can just be getting through the day at all.

Don’t be so hard on yourself and if you’ve done well, treat yourself a little!

At the end of the day, it comes down to your mindset.

Thinking positively makes you feel better in any situation, not just work.

Focus on yourself, your quality of work will only ever be as good as your headspace.
