Preventing eyestrain while office working

02/12/2022

While working in the office, you’re likely to experience eyestrain.

If you’re looking at a computer screen all day at work, plus extra screen time at home, it can get damaging, whether it’s your TV, phone, tablet, or something else.

To protect your eyes, we have some tips that you can use daily!

Turn down your screen brightness

The brightness of your monitor screen should match the brightness of the room you are in, it can cause discomfort if it’s brighter.

This also means that you should adjust your brightness throughout the day if you are in a room with lots of natural light and windows, as the time of day will affect the amount of light around you.

Some computers already have light-sensing technology which will adjust the brightness of your screen based on your surroundings, as your phone does.

One way to test if your screen is too bright is by holding up a sheet of paper next to it.

The white paper and the screen should have roughly the same brightness.

Move your monitor further away

Remember when you’d get told that standing too close to the TV would make your eyes go square?

Having a bright screen too close to your eyes won’t do that, but it is harmful for extended periods.

A recommended distance is around arm’s length.

Follow the 20-20-20 rule

When you are focusing on something close to your face, your eyes begin to move inward, toward each other.

This increases eyestrain, so to help with this, follow the 20-20-20 rule.

Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away or more, for 20 seconds.

This allows your eyes to relax and move outward again.

Use natural light when possible

Any form of fluorescent lighting can hurt your eyes.

Opting for as much natural light as possible will help reduce strain, even if you typically have a lot of screen time.

It’s all about balancing the kinds of light you are surrounded by.

You should always keep an eye on your health while office working, and that includes your eyes.
